singer who starred in French plays in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
She made theatrical tours world-wide and was one of the early prominent
actresses to make sound recordings and motion pictures. Her career was
helped by her relentless self-promotion and her unconventional behaviour
on and off the stage.
